MPs to debate anti-bullying motion

By

OTTAWA, ON (NEWS1130) – MPs will debate an NDP anti-bullying motion on Monday in the House of Commons.

The private member’s motion calls on all political parties to develop a national anti-bullying strategy.

In the meantime, candlelight vigils are planned for Friday night across Canada, and even in the US, in memory of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd.

The BC Coroners Service says preliminary indications suggest the 15-year-old took her own life last Wednesday after uploading a clip to Youtube detailing the bullying she endured.

The RCMP confirm more than 400 tips from around the globe have poured into an email account. Investigators are prioritizing those tips and are trying to determine which ones need to be acted on first.

“At this point, we’ve got upwards of 20 to 25 full-time investigators that are working on this to try to gain enough information and enough evidence to potentially lay charges against any individual or individuals that may have played a role here in some way,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen.

Thiessen noted police are also asking individuals to stop posting inappropriate and hurtful comments and images online that continue to re-victimize the Todd family and others. He said police are even getting complaints from young girls and adults because of those images.
