Canada’s World Cup quest ends with 8-1 loss in Honduras

SAN PEDRO SULA, HONDURAS (NEWS1130) –  Canada has been eliminated from World Cup qualifying after an 8-1 loss to Honduras.

Canada only needed a draw to advance to the final round but was never in the game.  A Honduran side, consisting of several Major League Soccer players got three goals apiece from Jerry Bengston and Carlo Costly in the romp, before a raucous crowd at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

“I don’t want to blame players.  It’s my responsibility.  All we can do is ask the fans forgiveness.  We know they probably won’t forgive me,” says Canadian coach Stephen Hart, who might be finished as coach of the National team.

The Honduran players showed poor sportsmanship, continuing to celebrate, even on the eighth goal of the game.  It is being called the worst performance by a Men’s Canadian National Team since an 8-0 loss to Mexico at the 1993 Gold Cup.

Honduras and Panama have now moved on to the final round.
