Halloween face paint recall ahead of holiday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are a lot of cheap costume items and accessories on store shelves with Halloween just over a week away, but what’s in some them can be downright scary.

There has been one safety recall and a consumer advocate is pretty angry about it.  Bruce Cran with the Consumers’ Association of Canada is frustrated that lead paint is still showing up in Canada, most recently in Halloween face paint.

“I just don’t understand how this can happen.  A lot of this stuff is already in the hands of people who will probably be applying it to children’s’ faces.”

He is always shocked when this happens.  “Many stores that sell cheap goods have been in trouble for this before and they have a responsibility to make sure that their products are safe.”

Chris Byrne with Time to Play Magazine says sometimes the cheap route isn’t always the best.  “I always recommend, especially with something going on your skin, just go with regular make-up that has been tested.”

He says a name brand is always an option.  “I would definitely go to a dollar store for a candy bucket or something like that, but when it comes to something being on my skin I might be a little more leery and go with what I know, maybe hit up a drugstore.”

The face paint being recalled by Health Canada is called “10 dazzling colours” and nearly 5,000 units have been sold.
