BC Ferries service back to normal

By

TSAWWASSEN (NEWS1130) -The Queen of New Westminster, which was removed from service today after an engine fire, is now back in service.

It will sail between Tsawwassen and Nanaimo’s Duke Point. Workers worked through the night to repair any damage by replacing the insulation and a fire-detector sensor head, then did safety tests, trials and inspections.

Yesterday, Deb Marshall with BC Ferries said the fire happened in the bow thruster compartment during a morning sailing, and the vessel returned to the dock after the fire was put out.

Two crew members suffered smoke inhalation but no passengers were hurt.

The Queen of New Westminster was built in 1964 and was previously taken out of service during the May Long Weekend when it encountered problems with the rudder and cooling system.
