OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The government of Canada has issued a travel warning for Jamaica due to tropical storm Sandy.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade says Canadians should avoid non-essential travel to the country. Air Canada has cancelled flights between Kingston, Jamaica, and Pearson International Airport.

The storm is expected to make landfall today and could be rated a Category One hurricane. Strong winds and heavy rain are also expected to hit Cuba.

By last night, the storm was centered about 420 kilometres south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica and had top sustained winds of 85 kilometres an hour.

Computer models show Sandy is on a projected path that cuts across the middle of Jamaica near Kingston, and the popular north coast resort of Ocho Rios, before passing over eastern Cuba and the Bahamas.

Sandy is expected to dump as much as 15-30 centimetres of rain across parts of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and eastern Cuba, with as much as 50 centimetres possible in some places.
