School sex ed should include talking about porn: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A local expert is calling for sex education in BC schools to include discussions around porn.

A British study shows children are becoming addicted to porn as young as age 11 and they’re looking into including it in their curriculum.

Psychologist Alison Jones says kids are being exposed to images and although they may be confused when they see them, it can also be exciting.  She says it’s important for schools to lead them through this topic and that will protect them not make them more vulnerable.

“I think it would be great if there could be a component put into the actual curriculum because this is the real world, this is our day and age, this is occurring,” says Jones.

She says without the discussion it can impact the way they approach sexuality in the future and their relationships.

“It can get people sort of over stimulated too where they’re seeking out sexuality or sexual release much earlier than they normally would be,” says Jones.

Jones says parents should be concerned, and the discussion should begin by around grade 6.

She says kids are becoming more savvy and it’s better for them to be able to discuss the topic with teachers, school councillors, parents, or another adult as opposed to their friends who likely won’t have accurate information.

The study was published by Plymouth University.
