New rapid transit routes on City of Vancouver’s wish list

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If the City of Vancouver wants to cut down on car use, transit will have to be ramped up.

The city’s new Transportation 2040 plan includes a wish list of rapid transit options.

Words like “workhorse” and “game-changer” are being used by Vancouver City Council to describe the impact transit will have on a plan to get more people out of their cars. The Broadway Corridor between Commercial Drive and UBC is the top transit priority.

But Jerry Dobrovolny, the city’s director of transportation, says rapid transit could also go along Hastings Street, Commercial Drive, Main Street, and 41st and 49th Avenues.

“We would be working with TransLink and the province to help to advance projects in those corridors as well,” he explains.

The city wants at least two-thirds of trips to be made by foot, bike, or transit by 2040. The Transportation Plan has been in the works for two years.

Council will vote on the plan tomorrow.
