Residents worried over temporary homeless shelters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Vancouver is promising neighbourhoods will be notified ahead of the introduction of four temporary homeless shelters being set up in the coming weeks.

City Hall is already hearing from concerned residents, even before any of the locations are announced. People near Seymour and Davie have caught wind of a plan to open one of the four shelters in their neighbourhood.

NPA Councillor George Affleck is sympathetic with their concerns. “I think the neighbours have a strong argument to say there are already a lot of low income and shelter organizations and buildings on Seymour between Drake and Robson.”

The city says neighbourhoods will be advised once development permits are sought but Affleck wants to see consultations. “I’m worried that the city is making decisions before consulting the neighbourhood. It seems to be happening again and again in our city.”

The city and the province announced funding for the shelters last week.
