Building supply store damaged in fire

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The two-alarm fire was at a strip mall on SE Marine Drive near Knight Street.

There were as many as a dozen people in Homemax Building Supplies, the cabinet shop that caught fire around 1:45 pm today.

Next door at Fitness Town, Casey Mott first noticed something was wrong when people started running by his office window. Then a customer ran in to tell them to get out. “When I came out of the office, I came out the front door and looked to the right and the whole side of the building was engulfed in flames.”

Firefighters quickly arrived on scene to find extensive flames showing from the single story strip mall complex. The fire was primarily contained to the east end of the building, with extensive fire damage to the cabinet shop and smoke damage to the adjoining businesses.

Firefighters say no one was hurt and that it’s too early to talk about cause.

Our newsroom phone boards lit up moments after the fire started. Adrienne gave us a call from the Knight Street Bridge.

“Heavy smoke and flames are blocking out the sun,” she described.
