Mayors aim to solve transit funding issue by February

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are talks taking place this coming week on two fronts as politicians try to find a fix for the region’s transit woes.  The goal is to figure out how they’re going to fund it.

Vancouver’s mayor is scheduled to take his message to Ottawa, in the hopes the federal government will include transit funding in the budget.  Meantime, some other mayors will begin discussions with the province’s transportation minister.

City of Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender says they’re trying to figure things out by the end of February.

“I don’t think we can afford to wait any longer.  I think we have to put our shoulders to the wheel and start really working on specific recommendations.”

Local mayors have been pushing road pricing in recent weeks as a way to fund transit.

“We’re going to discuss what that looks like, who should be doing what and how that gets done.”
