Steelers overcome loss of Roethlisberger to beat Chiefs

PITTSBURGH, PA (NEWS1130) – The Pittsburgh Steelers lost quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a shoulder injury but Shaun Suisham’s 23-yard field goal in overtime lifted them to a 16-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs took their first lead of the entire season when Jamaal Charles ran in to the endzone from 12-yards out early in the first quarter. Kansas City’s only win of the season came off of a field goal in overtime.

Ryan Succop booted his first of two field goals on the night early in the second quarter to make it 10-0 for the visitors, but their lead wouldn’t last long.

After Suisham got Pittsburgh on the board with a field goal, Mike Wallace made a remarkable diving grab in the endzone to tie the game 10-10 heading into half-time.

Early in the third quarter, Roethlisberger was forced to leave after receiving a hard hit. He reportedly went to a local hospital to get his shoulder checked out.

Pittsburgh took its first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter with Suisham’s second field goal of the game.

The Steelers had a chance to seal the win with the Chiefs facing fourth-and-long in the final minute of the game, but Matt Cassel scrambled to find Dwayne Bowe in field goal range. That set up Succop’s game-tying kick with no time left on the clock.

Kansas City won the toss in overtime and elected to receive the ball. Just a few plays into the extra period, Cassel was picked off by Lawrence Timmons and he took it back to the Chiefs five-yard line. Suisham booted the game-winner one play later.

The win is the 15th in a row for the Steelers in Monday night games. It’s also their fourth win in a row. The Chiefs extended their losing streak to six games.
