Gift card charges that may surprise

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Not all gift cards are created equal.

Many people don’t realize that, for example, some mall cards are subject to maintenance and activation fees.

Individual store cards are not allowed to have expiry dates or fees in Canada, but Mark Fernandes with the Better Business Bureau says there are still exemptions for multi-vendor cards, which he hears plenty of complaints about.

“They’re allowed to have expiry dates. If you’re not using the gift card within the allotted time period, a maintenance fee may be charged.”

Some people in Vancouver are not impressed.

“It’s totally unfair. If I knew that about a specific mall, I think I would refuse to shop there,” says one woman.

“Just give cash. It’s the exact same thing, but with no penalty,” suggests a male shopper.
