Constance Barnes fails to secure NDP riding nomination

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A bit of an upset in an NDP nomination meeting on Saturday.

Former park board chair Constance Barnes did not win the nomination for the riding of Vancouver-False Creek.

She was beat out by video game developer Matt Toner, who credits a strong campaign, executed by a contingent of young and enthusiastic supporters.

“We just turned the corner just this past week. We had a great team. A lot of young folks from film schools and game-developing schools. They made the difference. They literally got on the phone and made sure people came down and voted,” he insists.

He says he looks forward to advocating for his industry.

“I got into this race because the game industry has been taking a heck of a beating. Film and TV are taking a hit. We’re losing these people. We’re losing the industry. So I got into the race to restore it.”

Barnes had stepped down as chair of the park board when she announced she was seeking the nomination back in June. She is still a park board commissioner. Her campaign organizer says she wasn’t going to be providing any comment to media Saturday.

Barnes is also the daughter of the late Emery Barnes, a highly-respected MLA.

Former mayor Sam Sullivan has announced he will go after the Liberal nomination in Vancouver-False Creek.
