Backlash against wolf-kill contest in northern BC

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An award-winning wildlife photographer wants tourists to boycott northeastern BC, including the Alaska Highway, to protest a wolf-kill contest offering cash prizes for the biggest animals and a booby prize for the smallest wolf.

Competition sponsors, including the Peace River Rod and Gun Club and a realtor in Fort St. John, are taking a lot of heat from conservationists, scientists and even other hunters who are against killing for the sake of killing.

John E. Marriott is an accomplished nature photographer and contributing editor to Outdoor Photography Canada based in Canmore, Alberta.

In his blog, he is urging organizers to reconsider the contest, calling it unethical and threatening a nationwide campaign against it.

Marriott says he has cancelled a trip up the Alaska Highway next June and he is telling his thousands of fans to keep their tourist dollars at home too.
