Operating rooms open at Surrey Memorial Hospital

Surrey (NEWS1130) – No more elective surgeries should be delayed but expect other emergency rooms around the Lower Mainland will remain busy as Surrey Memorial Hospital cleans up from Monday’s flood.

Roy Thorpe-Dorward with Fraser Health says all nine operating rooms opened today at Surrey Memorial and five are are also being used at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Centre.

“We’ll be focusing on catching up on the 108 elective, non-urgent surgeries that were rescheduled over the past two days,” says Thorpe-Dorward, adding no further elective surgeries should be rescheduled.

In the meantime Surrey Memorial nurses, doctors and support staff are helping out at Jim Pattison where a 24/7 Urgent Care Center has been established.  It has capacity for 180 patients in a 24 hour period.

Emergency traffic continues to be diverted by BC Ambulance Service and Peace Arch Hospital has reported an ER patient increase of approximately 36 per cent.  Royal Columbian Hospital has seen a 27 per cent increase and Langley Memorial Hospital has seen a 16 per cent hike.

Construction crews broke a water main Monday, which flooded the ER at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Full cost of restoration, damaged equipment, and supplies is still not fully determined, however the construction project and Surrey Memorial site is fully insured.

The hospital is expected to remain closed for approximately two weeks as restoration work is completed.  Thrope-Dorward says once the water is removed, the clean-up process involves specific work required to meet applicable codes and standards.
