ER at Surrey Memorial reopens; fate of MRI still uncertain

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The emergency room at Surrey Memorial has re-opened, two weeks after a broken water main caused major flooding. However, restoration work at the province’s busiest ER continues.

Crews worked through the weekend to get the ward back open for today’s 8 a.m. target. But four stretcher areas and one washroom remain blocked off, though staff expect them to accessible in a few days.

The fate of the hospital’s MRI unit remains a question mark as well.

“The MRI is still undergoing its assessment to determine what level of functionality and when we might have that, if at all. So, we have to await… the final assessment on that. We’re expecting that within the next week to 10 days,” explains Rowena Rizzotti, head clinical programs and operations for Surrey Memorial.

She estimates damage to be in the millions of dollars, plus or minus the cost of the replacing the MRI.

A total of 108 surgeries were cancelled on the initial day of the flood, but Rizzotti says most of those have either been rescheduled or performed.
