Gateway Casinos says thousands are in favour of Surrey site

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Are you in favour of the mega casino planned for South Surrey?

Council will be reviewing a report with numbers for and against the project on Monday.

Gateway Casinos claims a community outreach it undertook reveals 3,700 people are in support of the project.

“They’re very excited about the jobs that will come to the community in the construction phase as well as once we get up and operating,” says the company’s Tanya Gabara.

“And they recognized that obviously having a theatre would help make a great night out when coupled with the other amenities.”

But, Terry McNiece with the South Surrey Rate Payers Association says way more people are against it.

“Because of traffic impacts, environmental impacts, lack of consultation, social impacts and increased criminal activity,” he insists.

“The social impacts include problem gambling and impacts on children and youth.”

He claims all except about six per cent of people living within five kilometres of the proposed site are opposed to the plan.
