Black ice on Lower Mainland roads

By

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – It was been a slippery morning commute today; Highway 1 between Langley and Chilliwack has been like a skating rink.

We sent News1130’s Jesse Johnston out to (carefully) check out the roads for you earlier on.

“It’s pretty scary out here,” he admits. “Though the highway all the way from Vancouver to Langley really wasn’t all that bad. But when you get closer to Chilliwack, that’s where the roads get really slick.”

Cars have gone into ditches and the median.

“I had a scary moment myself on a side street in Langley. I tapped on the brakes… it didn’t look like the roads were wet or there was any ice. I started to fishtail and just about ended up in the ditch myself. So, be careful out there; that’s the problem with black ice — you can’t see it,” says Johnston.

Black ice has also been reported in Mission and Maple Ridge; the Pitt River Bridge is quite slick. We’ve also heard about patches of black ice in Delta and side streets in Surrey.

It’s not all bad news, though; the Port Mann Bridge was wet but not all that slick for the morning commute. The same goes for most stretches along the highway. Vancouver roads are in pretty good shape, as well.
