Idle No More protest draws large crowd

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hundreds turn up to take a stand against Ottawa’s omnibus bill C-45 which recently passed.

Many people at the “Idle No More” protest at the Art Gallery today feel it will destroy Aboriginal rights. Many were waving flags, carrying placards and chanting along with drummers from area First Nations communities.

News1130 caught up with Jerry holding a sign that says “We hold the future of our children in our hands.” That phrase is something he truly believes in and that’s why he showed up today.

“All my nieces and nephews pretty much and all the other young kids in the world. Our ancestors fought for what we have today and we’re still fighting for future generations, after we’re gone,” says Jerry.

Nicola drove in from Merritt just to ensure her voice is heard. She says it’s not just an issue for her community.

“One heart, one mind, all nations! Because bill C-45 affects everybody, it’s not just First Nations people, it’s land rights, it’s water rights, it’s the environment,” explains Nicola.

Others say the omnibus bill is unconstitutional and will impact unions and education in Canada.
