Hydro Quebec repairs almost complete as new storm arrives

By

MONTREAL – Hydro Quebec is likely bracing for more potential blackouts as crews continue to repair the damage caused by a storm last Friday.

At the height of that storm, more than 110,000 of the utility’s customers were left without electricity in areas north of Montreal and in western Quebec.

Hydro-Quebec said Wednesday night that all but about 2,000 customers had their power restored.

The utility said with many blacked out clients in remote or isolated areas, workers had to don snowshoes or borrow snowmobiles to reach them.

The storm dumped about 50 centimetres of heavy snow and that caused many trees to sag onto power lines and many hydro poles had to be replaced.

Repair crews may be pressed into service again today due to a storm expected to dump at least 15 centimetres of snow on the Montreal-Laval areas and in southern Quebec.
