Registration open for businesses ahead of switch back to PST

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The prep work starts now for businesses ahead of the switch back to the Provincial Sales Tax from the Harmonized Sales Tax. More than 100,000 businesses will need to register to collect the PST come April 1st.

About 30,000 businesses have only ever existed under an HST regime; there will be an especially big learning curve for those companies.

The BC government has launched an online system for businesses to register. Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto urges them to act now.

“I had a small business for 22 years. We tend to put things off. My plea to business owners is ‘Don’t wait until the last week. Start today with your online registration.”

“We need to make sure that that transition back to the PST is as smooth and as efficient as possible.”

A survey last month found close to two-thirds of businesses in the province felt unprepared to go back to the GST/PST system from the HST.
