ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A couple of hikers almost had to spend the night on a very cold and snowy Sumas Mountain.
Constable Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police says the man and woman in their early 20s went for a walk, “not particularly prepared for a hike, in all due respect.”
“Each of them were equipped with their own cell phone and a flashlight,” he adds.
After about three hours on the mountain they ended up lost and very cold. They tried to call for help, but MacDonald explains cell-service was sporadic and they didn’t know where they were.
“Certainly, it’s nice to have technology and to believe that technology will be a means of communication if you get in trouble. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult on a large mountain for you to say where you are, except in a treed area or in a clearing.”
Search and rescue crews, a dog team and a helicopter eventually found them around 7 p.m. yesterday. They were cold, but otherwise doing okay.
