VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Two brothers have been acquitted in Vancouver Provincial Court of assaulting a gay couple.
The judge had trouble relying on the evidence.
Peter Regier and David Holtzman had been beaten after they tried, out of disgust, to snap a photo of a man urinating outside their condo.
But the two brothers accused in their attack, Parminder Singh Peter Bassi and Ravinder Robbie Bassi, were found not quilty.
It was a packed courtroom that heard the judge’s decision.
Tracey Bell is a friend of the men who were beaten and was fighting back tears afterwards. “I’m shaking, and my heart goes out to David’s family and Peter’s family and all the loved ones.”
Despite the strong emotions, Bell says they’ll pull together. “We’ll get through this. Their families are amazing.”
The judge in part was not convinced the two brothers were correctly identified by witnesses.
Holtzman died last year of an unrelated medical condition.
