Call for feds to review taxes on imported goods

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ripped off — that’s how Canadian consumers feel about the fact that consumer goods are priced higher in our country than in the US.

It’s not as simple as it seems though; different market sizes is a big contributor and the fact that suppliers often charge Canadian retailers more than counterparts in the US.

A senate committee report recommends a review of our import tariffs.

Central 1 Credit Union Chief Economist Helmut Pastrick agrees with these recommendations and says it would be beneficial as people would decrease their shopping across the border.

“Consumers would face lower prices here in Canada that would make their income go further and in that regard the economy would be better off.”

It also recommends studying the costs and benefits of reducing the 10 per cent mark up that Canadian exclusive distributors can add to the US list price of American books imported into Canada.

“It will take quite some time, some of these tariffs that have been implemented have some considerable interest groups behind them.”
