Cop killer gets unescorted day passes from prison

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A man who killed four people almost three decades ago _ including an RCMP officer in Richmond _ has been granted more freedom from prison.

The National Parole Board says 66-year-old Steven Leclair can have two unescorted passes from prison each month to visit his wife.

He was granted escorted day passes in 2010 and the parole board says he hasn’t caused any problems during his absences from prison.

In September 1980, LeClair was kicked out of a bar and went back and shot three people dead before hijacking a car and forcing the driver to take him to the Richmond RCMP detachment where he shot and killed 26-year-old Const. Tom Agar.

Another constable was wounded before Leclair was arrested.

Leclair was convicted of four counts of first degree murder in 1981 and given life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
