Thousands of businesses yet to register to collect PST

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province says it has done what it can to warn businesses ahead of the return of the PST.

Tens of thousands of them have yet to register.

The government has sent letters, made phone calls, and held seminars to prepare businesses for the switch from the HST to the PST.

The number of businesses that still need to register concerns Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto.

“For a lot of small businesses, they don’t have accountants or bookkeepers. They actually have to do it themselves. It’s important that of course we get the message out to small business owners, but this is not something that they are actually looking forward to do.”

She suspects many will wait until the last minute. “I think it’s fair to say the vast majority of businesses are not looking forward to returning to two tax systems.”

Yamamoto says her government has sent out letters, made phone calls and held seminars to get the word out. “If they have any questions, there’s a website. It’s pstinbc.ca
