Councillor wants a New Year’s Eve party in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – How would you like to ring in the new year in downtown Vancouver? A city councillor wants to have a party.

George Affleck says a lot of people he talks to on New Year’s Eve are looking for a party, but they can’t find one. “I’ve spent many New Years downtown, with thousands of people wondering, ‘Where’s the clock? Where’s the celebration? Where’s the event?'”

He says if they start planning now, they can figure out how to make it an event that’s safe and kid-friendly.

For him, a clock is a must.

“When you’re downtown and you’re there for New Year’s Eve, in my experience, people are standing around, staring at each other, looking for a clock or something. At bare minimum, it would be great if we could have a nice clock with a countdown,” says Affleck.

“I want it to be a fun celebration for Vancouver. You look across the country, we see events happening in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto… Why not Vancouver?”

For the last four years, the province has hosted all-ages parties. Affleck says they’ll look for sponsors to help cover the cost.
