VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People will be taking a break from cooking and dining out for a good cause. The 19th annual Dining Out For Life restaurant fundraiser to help people living with HIV/AIDS happens Thursday.
More than 250 restaurants all over the lower Mainland and Whistler are taking part says Lisa Martella with A Loving Spoonful. She says a part of the funds nourish men, women and children living with the illness. “We know that there’s been a lot of medications that can help with HIV and AIDS but the reality is that for those medications to work effectively, nutrition is a really important piece of that,” says Martella.
She points to many reasons why some patients are challenged and can’t get healthy meals. “One could be an income sort of situtation, others can there just too week and not able to leave their home to do any groceries or shopping let alone cook and clean a meal for themselves.”
A quarter of the proceeds from meals will be split among A Loving Spoonful and the Friends For Life Society which provides health and wellness programs for those with the illness. Last year, the event raised $200, 000 and the goal for this year is to match that amount.
