Province to give $2 m to help those with disabilities cope

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC government is providing $2 million to help those with developmental disabilities cope, but advocates say the cash is hardly enough to cover the backlog of need.

The money goes to the Giving in Action Society, providing grants to help pay for renovations for things such as wheelchair ramps and vehicle modifications.

Faith Bodnar of Inclusion BC says the funding is important, but now it’s time for the provincial government to address a long-standing funding gap.

Last year $1.5 million went towards 70 home renovations and 70 vehicle modifications, significantly less than the $5 million average of previous years.

Bodnar says the backlog has grown and as many as 700 people are lining up for help and service every year.

But John Warne, whose five-year-old son has cerebral palsy, says he hasn’t has issues with the funding gap and received $22 thousand from Giving in Action for a wheelchair accessible van last month.
