Judge rejects request for ban on rioter’s court proceedings

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A judge has rejected a request for a public or publication ban on court proceedings for a convicted Stanley Cup rioter accused of breaching conditions of her sentence.

Camille Cacnio was caught stealing two pairs of pants and a necktie from Black and Lee during the riot in June, 2011. She’s accused of breaching probation by being out after curfew.

Her lawyer had asked for the media and public to be kept out of the courtroom during the proceedings, arguing it would be in the “interests of public morals.” There will be arguments in court about Cacnio’s medical condition, something he says should be kept private.

However, a judge has denied that request.

Cacnio’s lawyer had asked for a publication ban on the proceedings, instead. However, the judge has also rejected that request.

The lawyer says Cacnio has become the face of the riot and has been bullied. He accuses the media of hounding his client.

The trial has been put over to June 10.
