Expected influx of businesses still yet to register for PST

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC government is staffing up to handle the last-minute rush of business owners that have to register to collect the PST.

Tens of thousands of businesses still need to do so, with less than two weeks to go before the tax makes its return.

If recent history is any indication, late-comers are taking a risk; remember how the system froze up for last-minute Port Mann bridge deal seekers?

Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto says the province has been preparing for a surge in the coming days.

“We’ve seen, just in the last week, the number of businesses that have registered jump exponentially,” she tells us.

With 40,000 businesses that still need to register, Yamamoto says they’ve planned for extra staffing and extended hours. She adds there’s no grey area when to comes to registering in time for April 1st.

“You cannot sell taxable items if you haven’t registered to collect the tax,” she emphasizes.
