Charges laid in Burnaby cold case

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby Mounties believe they’ve solved a murder that happened nearly 20 years ago.

Twenty-six year old Thomas Akerman was shot several times in 1994 and police have now charged 40-year-old Jaswant Gill in connection with his murder.  Ackerman’s body had been found at a recreation centre in Burnaby.

RCMP Corporal David Reid says the lead investigator in the case has been in touch with Akerman’s sister the whole time.

“She is very, very pleased.  Very pleased that it has reached this level and of course that all moves toward closure for the family as well.”

He adds their leads eventually went cold but they had some DNA and got the help of another police force to crack the case.  “Over time we were utilizing some other investigative leads and we came into contact with Vancouver Police and on a file they were doing and we worked together with them to bring a conclusion to this file.”

Gill was also charged in another cold case last month.  He’s accused of killing his wife Gurpreet in Vancouver in 2006.

Police won’t say whether they’re looking into any possible links between him and other unsolved cases.
