Raonic withdraws from Sony Open with illness

MIAMI, FL (NEWS1130) – Canadian Milos Raonic has withdrawn from the Sony Open with strep throat but expects to be ready to play when Canada hosts Italy in Davis Cup action in a little under two weeks.

The 14th-seed from Thornhill, Ontario pulled out of the event prior to his third-round match against American Sam Querrey. It’s the second time in two years that Raonic has had to retire from the event as an ankle injury sidelined him for a third-round match against Andy Murray in 2012.

The 22-year-old was a key factor in Canada’s Davis Cup win over Spain in February and will once again be heavily counted on at UBC against Italy.

“This will pass and I’m sure I’ll be fine for Davis Cup,” says Raonic.

Canada hosts Italy in a quarterfinal tie at UBC from Apr. 5-7. It will be Canada’s first ever appearance in the quarterfinals.

At No. 16 in the world, Raonic is Canada’s highest ranked male tennis player.
