Former corrections officer accused of accepting bribe

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A former corrections officer is accused of smuggling steroids and a cell phone into the Surrey Pretrial Centre.

Sedrick Dang has been charged with two counts each of accepting a bribe as an officer and breach of trust.

Corporal Bert Paquet with the Surrey RCMP says the charges are serious.

“Anytime we receive a call like this, our first thought is always the safety of the officers involved, whether they are corrections or police officers, but as well, members of the public, potentially,” he tells us.

“It’s definitely something that, obviously, BC Corrections takes very seriously, as well as the investigators from our detachment who were involved in this case,” he adds.

Paquet says the incidents happened in March, 2011 and November of last year. Paquet says Dang hasn’t worked a shift since he was charged last month.

Dang has been granted bail and will be back in court late next  month.
