Say goodbye to the HST!

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It took a while, but you can finally say good-bye to the Harmonized Sales Tax tomorrow.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation outlines where you may see some savings.

If you buy a lot of goods — you may not see a huge difference but where you will notice some savings are when you get a haircut or go for a meal at a restaurant.

Jordan Bateman with the CTF says the government estimates families will save a few hundred dollars a year.

“For your business it’s probably not worth it, it’s definitely going to provide a hit for certain sectors as far as economic competitiveness goes, but $350 is $350 and I think most families will consider it some welcome relief.”

Bateman adds it took the province 11 months to bring in the HST, and about 18 months to get rid of it. “The PST is an incredibly complex system and they’re basically starting from scratch because the old one had been so hopelessly out of date. You would have like to see them go quicker, but there’s no point in crying over spilled milk now.”

Bateman expects some people to be confused as we transition back.
