Massey Tunnel Replacement Project consultation has ended

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Phase two of consultation for the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project has come to a close.

Businesses on both sides of the Fraser River are hoping for a new crossing, whether it be a bridge or tunnel.

Peter Roaf with the Delta Chamber of Commerce says all five options presented by the province are good so it’s really hard to choose just one option.

Although it’ll be costly, he thinks building brand new infrastructure is needed. “It really comes down to those two basic options, to cross the river, a tunnel or a bridge in one location or another.”

He notes there are pros and cons to every plan. “We see a bridge opportunity as a chance to keep traffic flowing quickly, but the bridge option cuts into farmland because it has to start further back.”

The Richmond Chamber of Commere has a similar view but would also consider keeping the existing tunnel alongside a new span or tunnel. The organization conducted its own survey open to members and found that more than half support a new bridge. A third of the 245 respondents want to keep the existing tunnel and build a new crossing.

The Transportation Ministry has plans for more consultation before narrowing down preferred plans. The province is pleased with the amount of feedback received in phase two but has yet to reveal any firm numbers.
