Canada and Italy are level after first day of Davis Cup

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Milos Raonic downed Fabio Fognini in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 to level Canada and Italy at one match apiece in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final tie at UBC. Doubles play is featured on Saturday.

After taking the first two sets, the 16th ranked in the world Canadian and 31st ranked Italian exchanged service breaks early in the third set. On his fifth match point, Raonic sealed the victory for Canada.

The Thornhill, Ontario native blasted 25 aces in the match.

In the opening match, Vasek Pospisil gave the 18th ranked player in the world, Andreas Seppi a scare. The Italian dropped the first two sets 7-5 and 6-4, before coming back to take the final three sets  6-4, 6-3, 6-3 over the Vancouverite. Pospisil is ranked 140th in singles play.

The only match on Saturday, will be doubles play at 2 p.m.  Pospisil is teamed up with the sixth ranked player in the world in doubles, veteran Daniel Nestor.  The Canucks are scheduled to meet Daniele Bracciali and Paolo Lorenzi.
