Local teacher suspended; possible incident involving student

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver School Board isn’t saying much after reports suggesting a teacher at Kitsilano Secondary has been suspended for something that may have happened two years ago.

There are claims the teacher was put on leave following some kind of incident involving at least one student during a camping trip.

Kurt Heinrich won’t speak about the apparent incident itself, but says, “We have been working very closely with the police.”

“We understand they’re looking into the allegations at this time, and we want to really ensure that the public knows that Kits is and continues to be a very safe learning environment,” he adds.

News1130 asked Heinrich what his message is to parents.

“We have very, very sophisticated guidelines and protocols when dealing with these sort of incidents. We are very expeditious; as soon as we hear something, we move very, very quickly,” he says.

VPD Constable Brian Montague says investigators don’t yet know if anything criminal has happened.

“I can’t tell you a lot,” he explains. “We are looking into it. The details, at this time, are very vague.”

“We can’t verify that a criminal offence may have taken place. It’s still very early on,” he adds.

Mongague would not say what the teacher is accused of doing.
