Man convicted in boating accident gets two-year sentence

WHITE ROCK (NEWS1130) – A man from White Rock convicted in a deadly boat crash that happened off Vancouver Island five years ago has been handed a two-year prison sentence.

Joshua Escott, 42, also isn’t allowed to drive a boat for four years.

It was March 2008 when Escott was driving his boat near Bamfield. He didn’t have proper lights and the judge also ruled he was traveling at an unsafe speed.

His boat smashed into another vessel, killing 31-year-old Kristiana Rode.

The judge says Escott’s manner of operation displayed a reckless disregard of extreme risk.

The justice also called it concerning that Escott has wracked up 18 tickets on the road, many of them for speeding.

There was another death in the Rode family just before Kristiana was killed. The judge says that would have made the loss of Kristiana even more difficult to bear.
