Revised snow removal plan still needs more detail

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new plan to clear snow from Vancouver’s streets needs more detail, according to the city councillor who launched the review.

It was prompted by a nasty day on the roads in December.

The streets were slippery on December 19th, and following that, councillor George Affleck pushed for a review.

One of his concerns then: it appeared some bike lanes were being cleared before streets.

The result is a new plan that includes sanding the streets and tapping into the city’s emergency management plan.

But Affleck wants to get even more specific about which streets should get cleared first. “I think the top streets would be great. Say, Broadway, 49th, or whatever that might be. Granville. Things like that would be the priority should we have a situation like we saw in December.”

Affleck intends to bring it up when council meets on Tuesday. “We have an emergency plan that we use in the city should there be an earthquake, and they have designated certain streets in the city that we prioritize. I am interested to see why we didn’t use that same plan for a snow situation that we might have,” he says.
