A number of businesses have not switched to PST/GST system

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Make sure you’re keeping a close eye on your receipts after making a purchase. Fifteen per cent of BC businesses still haven’t made the switch to the PST/GST system.

Jordan Bateman with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says this is concerning and consumers need to be careful.

“Taxpayers need to make sure that any HST item that’s being charged at a business is only a five per cent because technically that’s all there is for the federal portion and any service that you’re buying. You should really double check to make sure you’re not paying both taxes,” says Bateman. “If you are buying a service, you should only be charged the GST.”

Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto agrees. “They should be taking a look at their receipts.”

Bateman says for the most part though it seems like people are getting used to the switch.  He says those businesses are on some shaky ground as far as fairness with customers is concerned.
