Boston bombing suspect calls brother ‘driving force’: report

By

BOSTON (NEWS1130) – The surviving Boston bombings suspect has reportedly told investigators that his older brother was the “driving force” behind the attacks.

CNN is reporting that according to a US government source, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, also told authorities that no international terrorist groups were behind the attacks.

In terms of a motive, Tsarnaev suggests his brother, Tamerlan, 26, wanted to defend Islam from attack, according to the source.

The surviving brother was interrogated and charged yesterday in his hospital room, where he was in serious condition with the throat wound and other injuries suffered during his attempted getaway. He has been writing down answers to investigators’ questions.

He’s been charged with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

The next step in the legal process against Tsarnaev is likely to be an indictment, in which federal prosecutors could add new charges. State prosecutors have said they expect to charge Tsarnaev separately in the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was shot in his cruiser Thursday night on the campus in Cambridge.
