Improvements coming to sidewalks on Ironworkers Memorial

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are improvements coming to the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, but not for drivers.

Sidewalks on the bridge are being widened outward by over than a metre, making more room for cyclists to pass one another, and for pedestrians not to feel like they’re going to be run over.

The hope is to encourage cycling for those commuting to and from the North Shore.

Erin O’Melinn with cycling group HUB says it’s a great way to encourage healthy, cleaner living. “There’s lots of bike routes on the North Shore side and on the Vancouver-Burnaby side, so our next push is, let’s also improves the signage and way-routes.”

Lighting and surfaces will also be improved, and with so many bike routes on either side, O’Melinn says it really helps with connectivity. “The Iron Workers Memorial Bridge is a very important regional connector, it’s got lots of destinations on both sides, so this is a great opportunity for people to start exploring those options by bike.”

The project was one of the last to be approved under the BC Liberals.

Completion is expected in 2015 after work begins late this summer.
