TORONTO – Winnipeg producer Merit Jensen Carr has won a $10,000 prize at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto.

The founder of Merit Motion Pictures landed the newly re-envisioned Don Haig Award, sponsored by the CBC’s documentary channel, at the annual event on Monday.

That’s the same day “Special Ed,” which she produced, made its world premiere at the festival.

The award, presented by the Hot Docs board of directors, honours a Canadian independent producer with a feature-length film in competition at the festival.

It recognizes creative vision and entrepreneurship as well as a track record of mentoring emerging Canadian filmmakers.

Jensen Carr, whose other credits include the Gemini Award-winning series “Recreating Eden,” will receive the cash prize at the Hot Docs’ Doc Summit on Friday.

Hot Docs runs through May 5.
