Cover up! Skin cancer cases continues to rise

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It may be hard for some of you to avoid the sun today — we’re expecting a high into the mid-20s in some areas.

The number of skin cancer cases has increased over the past couple of decades, says Stacey Berisavac (beri-sah-vits) with the Canadian Cancer Society.

She adds sunlight is at its peak between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and if you can’t help but go outside — then cover up.

“Create your own shade, bring a beach umbrella. Hats are in, wide rims are best, and cover up with long sleeved shirts, and wear sunglasses.”

You should be using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or 30 and slather it on half an hour before you head out.

UV rays are not only dangerous when it’s sunny, but also when it’s cloudy — so these rules apply year round.
