Does a base tan help protect against burning?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With temperature records breaking all over the place, many people are looking a little red this week.

An industry group, the Joint Canadian Tanning Association, says a good base tan would help protect against burning. It’s butting heads with the Canadian Cancer Society.

“A base tan only provides an SPF of two to four. By getting a base tan, you’re actually exposing yourself to harmful ultraviolet radiation in doses that are stronger than the natural sunlight,” says Amanda Harris with the Cancer Society.

She says indoor tanning beds have a minimum of five times stronger radiation than mid-day summer sunshine.

The temperature at YVR yesterday was 21.6 degrees, beating the old record high of 21.1 degrees that was set back in 1942. Abbotsford and Whistler also hit a new record high yesterday with 28 and 29 degrees, respectively.
