Riding Profile: Surrey Panorama

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Some races are just too close to call, and few are tighter than one in the province’s fastest growing city.

News1130’s series of “Your Vote” riding profiles continues with a look at Surrey-Panorama.

Stephanie Cadieux won the riding four years ago for the Liberals, but this time, she is running in Surrey Cloverdale to replace Kevin Falcon.

Representing the party in Panorama this time is local powerbroker Marvin Hunt.

“As a Surrey councillor, I lived through the 1990s and when we previously had an NDP government, many of the same people are the policy drivers for this group as well,” he says.

Hunt argues the only jobs the New Democrats are good at growing are ones in government. “My riding is a lot of business people, people that are in the construction industry, and those are all buoyed by a good economy.”

But Amrik Mahil of the NDP has business bona fides of his own, as a past president of both Blacktop Cabs and the Vancouver Taxi Association.

“We are giving people a choice of a growing economy, growing middle class, good paying jobs, and trained people,” he says.

“The big issues are transit, healthcare, education, skills training, and equality. There are four major issues, no question about it.”

Kevin Rakhra is running in Panorama for the BC Conservatives, while Sara Sharma is representing the Greens.
