Surrey Eagles improve to 2-0 at RBC Cup

SUMMERSIDE, PEI (NEWS1130) – Captain Brett Mulcahy scored 8:43 into overtime to lift the Surrey Eagles to a 5-4 victory over the host Summerside Western Capitals in round-robin action at the RBC Cup.

The Eagles, one of two teams representing the west region, improved to 2-0 at the event with the victory. Surrey beat the Truro Bearcats 7-0 in their first game on Sunday.

The teams traded goals in the first period. Christopher Caissy got Summerside on the board 8:24 into the first period and then Adam Tambellini tied it up just under seven minutes later.

The Western Capitals had a strong second period to take a two-goal lead into the intermission. JP Harvey put Summerside ahead once again before Trevor Cameron tied it 2-2.

Mitchell Maynard would score the host team’s second powerplay goal of the period to grab the lead back, followed by Caissy’s second goal of the game.

It took 6:45 of the third period for Surrey to pull within a goal. Devon Toews tallied on the powerplay to cut Summerside’s lead to 4-3, and then Tambellini would bury his second goal of the night with just 4:25 left in regulation.

The Eagles were rewarded for their hard work in overtime with Mulcahy’s winner. Surrey outshot Summerside 10-4 in the extra period.

Surrey will meet the Minnesota Wilderness, representing the central region, in it’s next game on Wednesday.
