BC Greens win a seat; an Independent is re-elected

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – History has been made, with the Green Party getting its first elected seat in the Legislature.

Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist with the University of Victoria, won in Oak Bay – Gordon Head on Vancouver Island.

Meanwhile, Green Party leader Jane Sterk was defeated by former NDP leader Carole James in Victoria-Beacon Hill, also on Vancouver Island. Sterk has said she would resign as party leader if she was defeated.

Vicki Huntington, an independent, has been re-elected in Delta South. She’s the only independent candidate to win a seat.

Huntington credits her previous history within the riding for her win; she says her constituents have been happy with her work to find a replacement for the Massey Tunnel.

“I think that shows a commitment to a change that I have suggested is needed in the province. I think it shows support for the work that I have done.”

She says she will continue to lobby the Liberal government for a replacement.
