NEXUS lines growing at the border

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The push by the Canadian and US governments for more people to get NEXUS passes seems to be creating longer line-ups for the expedited lanes.

One person who’s at the border almost every day has noticed a big change.

“Time of the day and day of the week will make a difference but at peak times it can get quite a long line here at NEXUS, sometimes even longer than the regular line,” says John Tompkins with West Coast Duty Free at the Pac Highway Crossing.  “For the most part it moves pretty quick but it’s definitely getting more all the time.”

“When they really started doing the push for NEXUS, as more people joined it just got busier and more and more,” he adds. “The times when the line-ups are excessively long for NEXUS are rare, at least at this crossing.”

He says the NEXUS lane is usually faster, though, because it gets cars through the border more efficiently.

There are now nearly 800,000 pass holders and last year the rate of people signing up nearly doubled, leading to people waiting for months to get their card.

In 2012, 25 per cent of land-based border crossings were made by NEXUS holders.
